It was a nice, blustery sort of fall day today so we decided to take a leisurely stroll on the walking trail and check out the Bark Park (since I had never been there before). Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I love the brisk cool air and the changing colors of the trees make me appreciate nature all the more.

Here’s the beginning of the walking trail: [click pic for larger image]

The bridge pictured here is actually a very prominent part of the walking trail. When standing upon it and looking down underneath it, once can tell that there is a seasonal creek that make it’s home here. Unfortunately, there was no water in it today, so I guess this is not one of the seasons when we should expect to see it.

While we were walking along the wooden bridge here, a gorgeous bright red cardinal was busily flitting from one tree to another. I managed to hone in on it with my camera, but unfortunately, as soon as I had maneuvered my finger to press down on the button and capture the spectacular image before me – it was gone. I was so disappointed! Oh well, maybe next time.

Off of one section of the walking trail is where the Bark Park can be found. It’s a nice sized, fenced in area where you are able to let your dogs run around off leash to stretch their legs. And for those of us with more energetic breeds, there is a teeter toter there and a ramp that they can run up and down on. Just outside of the fenced in area are a few picnic tables & benches, and I also see remnants of a grill on the cement patio area near the tables. Something tells me that I might be able to have a cookout here in the warmer weather. If nothing else I can pack up my laptop and do some work at the picnic tables while Baby Girl runs around burning off some excess energy.

As we were walking back home, I happened to notice the sign at the entrance way to our housing community. As you can see, it’s an invitation to join the management team for Thanksgiving Dinner on November 20th. Now, I don’t know about you, but I have never lived anywhere that invited you to a holiday dinner! I thought that this gesture of kindness was incredible and very, very thoughtful of the management staff here.

In the current economy where people are losing their jobs right and left, and money is tight, to be able to get a Thanksgiving Dinner for free is simply awesome. Make no mistake, this is not a small undertaking with 402 rental units here. They range in size from 1 bedroom all the way up to 3 bedrooms, so I can’t even begin to try to imagine how many people might be attending the Thanksgiving Dinner festivities.

That speaks volumes about their ’sense of community’ here at Smoky Crossing too. They really do seem to genuinely ‘care’ about the residents here. We picked that up when we paid our first visit here to view an empty rental unit they had available. Every member of their staff was warm, friendly and made you feel like family.

I can’t say this enough: I LOVE it here!

We recently moved into a really nice gated community, and they offer quite a few amenities to their residents. Among them, a resort sized pool, a fitness center that’s open 24 hours a day, a bark park, club house with kitchen, pool table, living room with fireplace, a walking trail, tennis courts, basketball courts and a sand volley ball court. Oh, and a huge playground for the kiddies.

Since Hubby leaves in less than 72 hours for Army Basic Training (yes, I am a NEW Army Wife), we’ve been trying to hang out and spend as much time together as possible. The past couple of weeks have been crazy for us, what with moving into our new digs here and him having to leave shortly. So, this evening we decided to unwind by shooting some pool.

Here we are shooting pool: [click for larger image]

I also took a shot of the kitchen while we were up there. The kitchen actually faces the pool room area, and you can see it in the image of John that I posted.

Having that kitchen there is just like being in your own home. You can use the microwave, put on a pot of coffee, etc. Using it is included in the price you pay to live here. I LOVE this place!

We had the best time together, just hanging out, being silly and shooting pool. It really sucks that he’s leaving in a couple of days for Basic Training, but on the bright side, he will be home again next month for two weeks for the Christmas Exodus break!

I’m not originally from this area. I am a native of Philadelphia, Pa. While Philly has it’s own unique beauty (if you like city life), having spent most of my life there, I longed for something else. I wanted a more laid back lifestyle. One that allowed me to appreciate nature and life to the fullest. For the most part, I have found that here in the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee. From the simplicity of a cantilever barn to the beauty of a rustic, old covered bridge, I have been able to really enjoy my life here.

If you’re anything like I was, you’re probably sitting there wondering what in the world a ‘cantilever’ barn is. Cantilever barns (see image on right) are 19th century vernacular farm structures found principally in two East Tennessee counties, Sevier and Blount. Their characteristic feature is an overhang, or cantilever, which supports a large second-story loft atop one or more log cribs on the base story. This particular cantilever barn can be found along the 11 mile Cades Cove Auto Tour.

When I say that I’ve been able to really enjoy my life here, I mean it. This region of the United States is one of the most beautiful areas that I’ve ever had the pleasure of living in. I’m like a kid in a candy shop, with all of the new sites to see and activities to experience! Since being here, my hubby has gotten me into hiking (which I never thought I would enjoy), but I do. I”m never without my camera, because it seems that there’s always something interesting to shoot.

I’ll be posting alot of pics here and on my other site Deb Did It, so be sure to visit both sites often.
